President Radev at B9 summit: We need not only a strategy how to stop the war, but also how to win the peace

The ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia poses a significant threat to peace and stability in the region and beyond. It is crucial to develop a comprehensive strategy that balances military, economic, and diplomatic instruments to stop the war and win the peace. This was the message conveyed by Bulgarian President Rumen Radev during the B9 summit, which brought together NATO member states to discuss the situation in Ukraine and the broader security environment in Europe.

President Radev stressed that the conflict has put the social and economic systems of European countries to the test for over a year now. It is necessary to search for new secure supply routes for energy and other resources to deal with the crisis. The future of Europe after the end of hostilities, including the new security architecture that will influence our future, is of key importance. Therefore, it is essential to balance military, economic, and diplomatic instruments to resolve the conflict and ensure lasting peace.

Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty guarantees the security of NATO member states. However, the deteriorated security environment requires real action to strengthen the national defense capacities of individual countries to contribute to common security. Bulgaria supports Ukraine within its capabilities and will continue to support international efforts to find a sustainable solution to the war in Ukraine.

The B9 countries adopted a joint declaration condemning Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine. The statement reaffirms NATO’s commitment to defend every inch of Allied territory and enhance Allied military presence in countries that feel threatened by Russia. The Open Door policy invites Finland and Sweden to join the Alliance, and they will soon become NATO allies. The statement also reiterates the commitment to uphold the UN Charter and international law, and Ukraine’s legitimate right to defend itself against Russian aggression.

The joint declaration is a clear message to Russia that the B9 countries are united in their commitment to peace, security, and stability in the region and beyond. The conflict in Ukraine is not only a threat to Ukraine but to the entire Euro-Atlantic area. Therefore, it is crucial to develop a comprehensive strategy that balances military, economic, and diplomatic instruments to stop the war and ensure lasting peace. This requires the cooperation and support of all NATO member states and partners.

In conclusion, the conflict in Ukraine poses a significant threat to peace and stability in the region and beyond. It is essential to balance military, economic, and diplomatic instruments to resolve the conflict and ensure lasting peace. The B9 joint declaration reaffirms NATO’s commitment to defend every inch of Allied territory, enhance Allied military presence in countries threatened by Russia, and uphold the UN Charter and international law. The future of Europe after the end of hostilities, including the new security architecture that will influence our future, is of key importance. It requires the cooperation and support of all NATO member states and partners to achieve lasting peace and stability in the Euro-Atlantic area.
