Public Involved in Naming Prague’s New Bridge Over the Vltava River

New Bridge in Prague to be Named after a Significant Woman

Prague is set to get a new bridge over the Vltava River, connecting Prague 4 and 5. The bridge, known as Dvorecký, is expected to be completed in 810 days and will cost 1.075 billion crowns. The bridge will serve trams, buses, cyclists, pedestrians, and emergency vehicles. Construction work began in September 2022, and the bridge is expected to be completed by 2025.

The name of the new bridge will be chosen by the public through an online survey. The Municipal Topographic Commission will select the final name from a pre-selection of proper names, with the preference being someone connected to the area. The bridge will be named after a significant female personality, in line with the commission’s initial suggestion.

The bridge is part of a broader infrastructure project that includes constructing two new tram tracks, road improvements, and relocating utilities. The construction of the bridge will reduce travel time between Prague 4 and 5 and improve transport connections. The bridge will have a length of 388 meters and a width of 16 meters, including both approach ramps and retaining walls.

The eastern end of the bridge will be at the northern edge of the Žluté lázně complex, and the western end will be close to the Lihovar tram stop. The bridge will also have a bike path connecting both banks of the river, improving cycling and pedestrian connectivity in the city.

The new bridge in Prague will be a vital addition to the city’s transportation infrastructure, providing better connections and reducing commuter travel time. The previous bridge, Trojský, was completed in October 2014, and it is only for pedestrians and cyclists. It replaced an older bridge that had been closed for years due to safety concerns. The new bridge over the Vltava River in Prague will serve trams, buses, cyclists, pedestrians, and emergency vehicles, improving connectivity and reducing travel time for commuters.
