Reviving Kempaland Ski Area: Bukovec Village Takes Matters Into Their Own Hands

Amidst uncertainty last fall surrounding the future of the Kempaland ski area in Bukovec, located in the Jablunkov area, the municipal Technical Services, responsible for operating the ski resort for years, faced financial challenges, leading to its dissolution. Threatening the loss of the ski slope, the easternmost domestic village was left to navigate the complex task of finding a new operator for the ski resort.

Mayor Monika Czepczorová (For Bukovec) revealed that despite the village’s efforts to attract potential operators through a selection process, no applications were received. The financial struggles of the resort, compounded by unpredictable weather patterns, led to consistent losses. The former managing director of the now-dissolved company, Andrea Ligocká, disclosed a yearly deficit exceeding a million crowns. Recognizing the financial strain on the village, Technical Services was dissolved, prompting the village to explore alternatives.

Facing the dilemma of either closing the ski resort or taking direct control, the representatives of Bukovec, with approximately 1,400 inhabitants, opted to save Kempaland, even with the prospect of incurring additional losses. Mayor Czepczorová emphasized the significance of their decision, stating that closing the resort would render reactivation improbable.

As the village seeks a sustainable future for Kempaland, negotiations are currently underway with an interested party. Mayor Czepczorová remains optimistic about reaching an agreement but disclosed a contingency plan involving a foreign company if negotiations fall through. The determination of Bukovec to safeguard and revitalize the ski area reflects a commitment to local recreational amenities and a willingness to navigate financial challenges for the benefit of the community. The outcome of the negotiations will play a pivotal role in shaping the next season for Kempaland and determining its trajectory under new management.
