องค์การสหประชาชาติ (United Nations: UN) ได้รับการสถาปนาอย่างเป็นทางการ หลังจากสงครามโลกครั้งที่ 2 สงบลง โดยมีประเทศสมาชิกผู้เริ่มก่อตั้ง 51 ประเทศ เมื่อวันที่ 24 ตุลาคม 2488
ไทยเข้าเป็นสมาชิก UN ลำดับที่ 55 เมื่อวันที่ 15 ธันวาคม 2489
