Severe thunderstorms to arrive, meteorologists warned

High temperatures on Thursday afternoon will be accompanied by strong thunderstorms that may form sporadically in the western half of the territory. Meteorologists expect them to be accompanied by torrential rain, hail, and gusty winds.

Strong thunderstorms are expected by the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (ČHMÚ) in Prague, Central Bohemia, South Bohemia, Pilsen, Karlovy Vary, Ústí nad Labem and parts of the Liberec and South Moravia regions, as well as in Vysočina from 3 pm to 10 pm.

“The occurrence of strong thunderstorms will be more likely in Bohemia on Thursday, and stronger wind gusts in thunderstorms are more possible, especially in the southern half of Bohemia,” meteorologists said, referring to a brewing cold front.

The storms could drop up to around 30 millimeters of rain, leading to smaller streams being swollen.

A warning of high or very high temperatures is also in force across the territory, except for the Karlovy Vary region on Thursday, which may exceed 34 °C at its maximum.

On Friday, the heat should hold off in the country’s east, with the hottest temperatures in the southeastern regions, specifically parts of the South Moravia and Zlín regions.

A fire danger warning remains in force.

A strong storm in Moravia

Weather developments depend on whether it will remain in effect for the next few days. “Strong thunderstorms are likely on Friday, especially in the country’s eastern half. The occurrence of supercells cannot be ruled out in Moravia. On Saturday, thunderstorms are likely to occur only in eastern Moravia,” the Czech Hydrometeorological Office said, adding that heavy rainfall could be expected in the western half of the Czech Republic, with totals of up to 50 millimeters.

At the same time, meteorologists stress that the outlook for the next three days varies according to individual models and is therefore burdened with considerable uncertainty. They, therefore, recommend monitoring forecasts and waiting for updates.
