‘Spaceman’: Adam Sandler’s Prague-shot Netflix film pushed back to 2024

Spaceman, which shot in Prague and other locations in the Czech Republic way back in 2021, was expected to debut on Netflix later this year but has apparently been pushed back to 2024, according to What’s On Netflix. The delay may be linked to the ongoing strikes in Hollywood, but the film has nevertheless been sitting on the shelf for awhile.

Based on Czech writer Jaroslav Kalfař‘s 2017 novel Spaceman of BohemiaSpaceman stars Adam Sandler as Jakub Procházka, an astrophysicist who becomes the Czech Republic’s fictional first astronaut and embarks on a lengthy journey into space.

Carey Mulligan stars as Jakub’s Earthbound wife Lenka, and Paul Dano plays Hanuš, an alien creature who forms a close bond with Jakub during his journey. Isabella Rossellini appears as Jakub’s grandmother, and Kunal Nayyar is his mission engineer.

In Prague, Spaceman shot at locations including the Desfours Palace by the Florentinum business complex, the Zelený Pruh swimming pool, Prague Congress Center, and areas in Radotín.

Outside of Prague, Spaceman also shot at locations in Marianské Lázně, Černošice, Bystřice, Slapy, Jetřichovice, Bernartice, the Branov campsite, and rural areas in the Central Bohemian region south of the Czech capital.

Spaceman was directed by Johan Renck (Chernobyl), from a screenplay adapted from Kalfař’s novel by Colby DayStillking Films handled the local production of the film in the spring of 2021, while additional filming took place in New York City.

According to World of Reel‘s Jordan RuimySpaceman was completed and had test screenings way back in February of 2022. Despite the film reportedly being in the can for eighteen months, Netflix has not released a trailer, poster, or even a single promotional image for Spaceman.

While the delay in release and lack of promotion might seem to indicate some post-production issues, that’s not necessarily unusual for the streaming platform. Perhaps Netflix is gearing Spaceman up for an awards season run, and has pushed it back due to its stars unable to participate in publicity for the movie during the actors’ strike.

Netflix will release three other Adam Sandler-starring movies in 2023, with Murder Mystery 2 having been released in March, You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah, which pairs the star with his real-life wife and daughters, hitting the streamer in August, and Leo, an animated film in which Sandler voices an elderly lizard, due out in November.

Keep an eye out for Spaceman to hit Netflix at some point in 2024, which will mark three years after wrapping its production in Prague.
