Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies Markéta Pekarová-Adamová visited London

Markéta Pekarová-Adamová, the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic, visited London on 24 and 25 January at the invitation of her British counterpart, Sir Lindsay Hoyle.

Accompanied by her colleagues from the Chamber of Deputies, Ondřej Lochman and Aleš Juchelka, she met both the Speaker of the House of Commons, Sir Lindsay Hoyle, and the Speaker of the House of Lords, Baron John McFall. She also met with representatives of the newly established All-Party Parliamentary Group on Czechia, chaired by Richard Thompson MP.

The delegation also attended Prime Minister’s Questions at the House of Commons and visited the Westminster Synagogue, where they viewed the Czech Torah scrolls, which this year mark 60 years since they were brought to the United Kingdom from Czechoslovakia.

Finally, members of the delegation held a debate with Czech students studying in the United Kingdom and also with Sir Nicholas Winton’s son Nick Winton and two of the so-called ‚Winton children‘, Lady Milena Grenfell-Baines and Baron Alfred Dubs. This year marks the 80th anniversary of the Kindertransports, through which Sir Nicholas Winton helped save 669 mainly Jewish children from the then Czechoslovakia from imminent death at the hands of Nazi Germany.
