State Secretary Rubeš at the UN Human Rights Council

On Monday, 26 February, the 55th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council began in Geneva and will last until 5 April, the longest ever. The Czech Republic was represented in the high-level segment from 26 to 28 February by State Secretary Radek Rubeš, who participated in several bilateral meetings, an event in support of Ukraine and will also meet with the Czech expatriate community.

“We are living in a time of pervasive conflict, upheaval and crises that have a devastating impact on human rights. The Czech Republic will work with its international partners to ensure that the Council can function effectively, succeed in its many tasks of promoting and protecting human rights and preventing human rights violations around the world,” said Radek Rubeš.

In addition to bilateral talks on supporting the Czech Republic’s candidacy for the UN Human Rights Council for the period 2025-2027 and the UN Security Council for the period 2032-2033, State Secretary Rubeš also held talks with the Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights, Nada Al-Nashif. These meetings were complemented by meetings with Tomas Lamanauskas, Deputy Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union, and Pala Albrito, Acting Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction.

On Tuesday, the Secretary of State participated in an event in support of Ukraine entitled “Standing with Ukraine? Resilience in the Face of Aggression,” hosted by the Permanent Delegations of Ukraine and the United States. The Secretary of State’s programme in Geneva was complemented by a visit to the Czech School without Borders and a meeting with representatives of the Czech community.
