Stunning Artwork to Grace Entrance of Žižkov Tunnel as Tachovské náměstí Reconstruction Nears Completion

The ongoing reconstruction of Tachovské náměstí is set to conclude with the installation of a captivating artwork that will provide an enchanting experience for pedestrians and cyclists at the entrance to the Žižkov tunnel in Prague. Originally, the design included water elements, but due to technical challenges, a new concept has been selected.

From a pool of around two hundred proposals, the jury comprising independent experts and representatives of the municipal district meticulously evaluated each submission to determine the most suitable artwork. The initial winning design, called Trubka (Pipe), by Studio Polytonal, seamlessly integrated water and light elements. However, after careful consideration, it was realized that implementing water features at the chosen location would be technically unfeasible.

Efforts were made to find an alternative solution, but ultimately the winner decided to pass on the implementation of the artwork. As a result, the design that ranked second in the competition, created by Vít Šimek from Atelier HRA, emerged as the closest to realization. The design revolves around the ingenious use of light in combination with mirrored walls along the entrance to the Žižkov tunnel, employing polished stainless steel.

The completion of the artwork is scheduled for the transition between this year and the next, with pedestrians and cyclists eagerly anticipating its unveiling in the first half of 2024.

The municipal district had initiated an open competition in September of the previous year to solicit ideas for a unique work of art at the entrance to the Žižkov tunnel. Recognizing the significance of this crucial connection between Karlín and Žižkov, the inclusion of art in the area had been a part of the reconstruction plan from the outset. During the reconstruction process, the tunnel had been closed for nearly two weeks, emphasizing the importance of the project.

With the forthcoming installation of the captivating artwork, the Tachovské náměstí reconstruction will reach its culmination, leaving residents and visitors alike in awe of the remarkable blend of light and mirrored surfaces that will adorn the entrance to the Žižkov tunnel. The art installation promises to be a testament to the creativity and vision of the selected artist, Vít Šimek, and will undoubtedly enhance the overall aesthetic appeal of the area while offering a unique and immersive experience for all who pass through.
