This year, Prague will open the most new sections of cycle routes in history.

Last year confirmed a record increase in the number of people who ride Prague by bike. According to statistics, people are increasingly using bicycles not only for leisure time, but also for driving to work. Therefore, Prague will continue this year with significant investment activities in creating favorable conditions for cyclists. 16 new sections of cycling routes should be put into operation. In total, Prague has invested more than one billion crowns in the development of cycling infrastructure since 2019, with 245 million crowns set aside for this year.

nvestment in bicycle transport will continue to increase in the capital. “We only invest 127 million crowns through the Technical Administration of Roads, and with subsidies for city districts this year we reach less than a quarter of a billion. We will open the most new sections of cycle routes in history. This is the result of intensive preparations in recent years, “said the Deputy Mayor of Prague. of the City of Prague for transport Adam Scheinherr.
“Until recently, it was possible to implement the simpler parts of trails and routes of city-wide significance. Now, at last, there are also more complex sections that have been historically postponed or have only been prepared for many years, “said Radek Čermák, Chairman of the Cycling Commission at the Prague City Hall. In the city center, cyclists will also be able to use the new footbridge between Holešovice and Karlín, which is an investment worth almost 200 million crowns.     The capital city of Prague also took a record step in building infrastructure for cyclists last year. A total of 21 kilometers of new cycle paths have started to serve them, almost twice as many as in the previous three years combined. There were also 27.5 kilometers of cycle lanes, 19 new cycle crossings and 37 new sections of cycle routes. Significant investments will continue this year as well. The dynamic development of cycling infrastructure thus continues at a time when bicycles are becoming an increasingly popular means of transport for Praguers.
“Last year confirmed the significant growth in the popularity of bicycle transport. The counters recorded almost 5.9 million trips of Praguers on the city’s cycling routes. We also know from the counters that the number of passages has basically doubled since 2019, and at least once a month, 456,000 Praguers cycle in Prague. We originally thought it could be a one-off increase due to the coronary crisis. However, it turned out to be a clear trend of growing popularity of cycling. This is also indicated by the fact that a large part of the rides take place on weekdays. Cycling is simply becoming a common form of transport for Praguers around the city. And that’s good. Every cyclist is one car less in crowded streets or freeing up a seat on public transport, “said Deputy Adam Scheinherr. At least once a month, every second adult person now rides a bicycle in Prague.     Since 2019, the total investment in bicycle infrastructure has reached 1,037 million crowns, including the funds that the city will invest this year. About half of this money is invested through city districts.
In 2022, the amount of investments after the sum of 127 million from the budget of the Technical Administration of Roads in the capital reaches. m. Prague and 118 million from subsidies for city districts less than a quarter of a billion crowns. This year, subsidies for city districts are allocated to projects with a building permit already issued and ready for implementation. The amount of money thus fully corresponds to the broader budget framework of investments in bicycle infrastructure (eg including the Štvanická lávka) exceeding more than half a billion.
This year, the capital will continue to mark new cycle lanes in places where it is not possible to build separate two-way trails in sufficient parameters. Emphasis is also placed on avoiding lanes for cars. Each proposal is always thoroughly discussed with the city district and with the state administration bodies whose consent is necessary.
