Czech Government Approves Purchase of 24 F-35 Aircraft for 106 Billion Crowns, Ensuring Long-Term Defense Capability

In a significant move, the Czech government has granted approval for the acquisition of 24 F-35 aircraft, representing an expenditure of 106 billion crowns. Prime Minister Petr Fiala, a member of the ODS party, announced this decision, emphasizing its importance as a long-term solution to bolster the country’s defense capabilities. These state-of-the-art US fighter jets will replace the currently leased Gripen fighters in the Czech Republic, with the lease set to expire in 2027.

The initial batch of F-35 aircraft is expected to be delivered to the Czech army by 2029, with the entire fleet slated to be in operational service by 2035. Prime Minister Fiala confirmed that the funding for this substantial acquisition will be sourced from the defense ministry’s budget.

Defence Minister Jana Černochová, also a member of the ODS party, underlined the urgency of this procurement, emphasizing that there is no room for temporary or makeshift solutions. She further highlighted the impressive longevity of the F-35s, projecting their service life until at least 2069. The acquisition itself is budgeted at 106 billion crowns, with an additional 44 billion crowns allocated for preparations and operational readiness. Notably, there are plans to involve domestic industries in the process, fostering economic and technological benefits.

Karel Rehka, the Chief of the General Staff, expressed admiration for the government’s bold decision, aligning with the army’s recommendations. The military had strongly advocated for the acquisition of 5th generation aircraft, and Rehka clarified that the F-35s will not only replace the Gripen fighters but also the L-159 fighter jets. He underscored the strategic significance of acquiring this advanced capability to meet the evolving needs of future battlefields, characterizing it as a forward-looking and vital step to enhance the Czech Republic’s defense posture. This substantial investment in cutting-edge defense technology reaffirms the nation’s commitment to maintaining a robust and modern military to safeguard its security and interests.
