Czech Intelligence Officer Dismissed for Leaking Confidential Information to the President’s Office

Martin Kropík, a member of the Czech Intelligence Service’s special counterintelligence section, has been stripped of his security clearance and terminated from his employment after being found guilty of passing confidential information to the President’s Office during the time of former President Miloš Zeman.

The disclosure came to light when Kropík was discovered meeting with Jiří Rome, a former employee of the Czech Intelligence Service (BIS) who now holds a position in the President’s Office. It was revealed that Kropík shared sensitive details about BIS’s operations, including methods for detecting intelligence-gathering devices, during these meetings. The breach of confidentiality and trust was deemed a serious violation of his responsibilities.

Kropík, who had been involved in technical activities related to counterintelligence, such as conducting security checks of monitored areas, repeatedly denied any wrongdoing when questioned by BIS. However, the evidence against him was substantial, leading to his dismissal.

Jiří Rome, who had served as a top analyst for BIS for nearly three decades before joining the President’s Office, is now being investigated for his role in receiving the leaked information. The investigation, overseen by BIS’s inspection department under the supervision of the Prague High Public Prosecutor’s Office, is focused on determining whether any laws governing the protection of classified information were violated.

As the investigation is ongoing, specific details surrounding the leaked information and the potential implications for national security have not been disclosed. However, the incident highlights the importance of maintaining strict confidentiality and trust within intelligence agencies, and the repercussions for individuals found guilty of compromising classified information can be severe.
