Czech Organization “Zachraň jídlo” Tackles Food Waste and Poverty with Second “Obědovka” Collection

In a proactive move to address both food waste and rising poverty rates, the Czech organization “Zachraň jídlo” is launching its second public collection, “Obědovka.” This innovative initiative seeks to combat the staggering problem of food wastage in corporate canteens by redistributing leftover meals to those in need. Recent findings indicate that an astonishing 72,000 lunches go to waste daily in such canteens, a concerning statistic given the simultaneous increase in the number of Czech households living below the poverty line, rising from nine to sixteen percent in recent years.

The Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs has reported alarming figures, revealing that in 2022, a staggering 271,820 adults and children experienced housing poverty. Among the most affected groups are single parents and individuals of retirement age, with nearly 13,000 people residing in asylum homes last year. For many in these vulnerable groups, access to a warm, quality meal remains a luxury they cannot afford.

“Zachraň jídlo” has been at the forefront of efforts to combat food waste by facilitating the donation of surplus meals from corporate canteens through its “Rescue Lunch” project. This initiative has successfully connected canteens with charitable organizations, ensuring that valuable food is provided to those in need free of charge.

Contributions to the “Obědovka” collection have a tangible impact on addressing food insecurity. A donation of 500 CZK (approximately $22 USD) rescues twenty portions, providing meals for twenty individuals in need. A 1,000 CZK donation feeds forty-five people, while a 4,000 CZK contribution rescues 200 portions for 200 hungry individuals.

With the success of this year’s “Obědovka” collection, “Zachraň jídlo” aims to expand its reach, incorporating more participating canteens and asylum homes. Through this initiative, the organization strives to make a meaningful difference by feeding thousands more individuals in need, fostering a more sustainable and compassionate approach to addressing food waste and poverty in the Czech Republic.
