Czech Republic and Slovakia Seek Energy Security Through Joint Projects
The Czech Republic and Slovakia are collaborating to enhance energy security and ensure reliable energy supplies in both countries. During a joint meeting of the Czech and Slovak governments, both countries agreed that they share the same attitude towards nuclear energy, which is a vital part of their energy mix. They discussed the need to secure sufficient nuclear fuel from safe sources as soon as possible and to move away from the Russian source, due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. According to Slovak PM Eduard Heger, it is necessary to obtain enough nuclear fuel from a responsible supplier to ensure stable electricity supply to the grid.
Last week, it was announced that the state-controlled power utility CEZ will receive nuclear fuel for the Dukovany plant in South Moravia from US-based company Westinghouse starting in 2024. The plant has been using fuel from Russian state-owned TVEL, a part of Rosatom, but CEZ decided to replace its supplier due to security reasons.
In the energy sector, both countries have managed to avoid an energy crisis in the past. However, they agreed that it is important to seek joint projects that will strengthen energy security and ensure long-term reliable supplies. Czech PM Petr Fiala suggested that capacity in LNG terminals located in countries by the sea is essential for the Czech Republic. Currently, discussions are ongoing regarding the capacity at the German terminal in Lubmin, which is directly connected to the Czech and Slovak gas systems. Fiala also stated that they are trying to establish a direct connection with Poland and would like to lease capacity at the LNG terminal in Gdansk.
By seeking common projects that will enhance energy security, both the Czech Republic and Slovakia can rely on long-term energy supplies. Collaborating to secure enough nuclear fuel from safe sources and building capacity in LNG terminals will help both countries achieve their energy goals while also meeting environmental goals.
