On July 6th, the Czech Republic observes Jan Hus Day, a holiday dedicated to commemorating the life and legacy of Jan Hus, a renowned theologian and philosopher whose influence greatly shaped Czech and European history.

Born in Bohemia during the 14th century, Jan Hus experienced a time of significant religious and political turmoil. Rising to become a priest and a professor of theology at the University of Prague, Hus developed ideas that challenged the authority of the Catholic Church.

Hus firmly believed that the Bible should be the ultimate arbiter of matters of faith, advocating for its supremacy over papal decrees and ecclesiastical hierarchy. He also voiced opposition to the sale of indulgences, condemning the practice of purchasing forgiveness for sins.

Today, Jan Hus is revered as a national hero in the Czech Republic, symbolizing resistance against oppression and embodying the pursuit of truth and justice.
