Czech Republic Set to Introduce eDoklady Mobile App: Digital ID Revolution in January

In a groundbreaking move toward digitalization, the Czech Republic is poised to launch the eDoklady mobile application in January, revolutionizing how citizens manage their identification. This innovative app will empower users to replace physical ID cards with a digital version stored on their smartphones, marking a significant leap in the country’s digital transformation.

The eDoklady app is designed to be a versatile tool, recognized by both offices and vendors. Users can seamlessly integrate their digital ID for various purposes, such as age verification, online shopping, or flight bookings. Minister for Local Development, Ivan Bartoš, highlighted the utility of the digital ID in age verification scenarios, enabling users to independently confirm their age at self-service checkouts without the assistance of staff.

While the digital ID will be functional at ministries and central offices from January, the complete adoption of this feature may take time. Job centers and municipal offices, for example, are expected to recognize the digital ID six months later, signaling a gradual implementation across different institutions.

One of the notable applications of the eDoklady app is in the realm of driver’s licenses. Starting from January, drivers will no longer be mandated to carry physical driver’s license cards. Instead, they can electronically prove their identity to a police patrol. However, this electronic verification feature is also anticipated to take approximately six months to become fully operational.

The app’s functionality relies on a secure login process, facilitated by a set-up electronic identity provided by most banks. Users can access the app using a PIN, fingerprint, or facial scan, akin to online banking security measures. The verification process involves a QR code within the app, with the option for users to selectively share data during verification, enhancing privacy controls.

While the eDoklady app is currently in its prototype phase, additional documents beyond ID cards are expected to be uploadable in the future. The completed product is slated to be available by the end of the month, marking a pivotal moment in the Czech Republic’s journey toward a more digitally integrated and streamlined identification system.
