Czech Universities reported a record number of international students in 2021

Recent data released by the Czech Statistical Office (CSU) has revealed that a record number of 52,109 foreign students were enrolled in Czech universities in 2021, 4.4 per cent more than in the previous year.

The data, which was released in December, showed that international students made up 17.1 per cent of the total 304,073 university attendees in 2021 and the vast majority of international students in the Czech Republic studied at public universities (90.5 per cent).

The highest number of foreign students studied at Prague’s Charles University, which accounted for 50.9 per cent of the total number. This was followed by Brno’s Masaryk University, then the universities of Olomouc and Ostrava.

It was also revealed that the largest groups of international students studying at Czech Universities in 2021 were from Slovakia (21,913 students).

Other nationalities which have seen substantial growth in market share included Russians (16.5 per cent), Ukrainians (8.9 per cent), and Kazakhstanis (5.2 per cent). In addition, the share of students from India and Belarus had gradually increased.

In contrast, the share of students from other EU countries studying in the Czech Republic has decreased over the last decade, from 68.8 per cent in 2012 to 50.3 per cent in 2021.

According to Jarmila Marešová from the Department of Manpower, Migration and Equal Opportunities of the CZSO, “the most preferred fields with the highest number of foreigners were health and social care, environmental care, and business, administration and law”.

This differs from the most popular subject for Czech and international students combined, which was information and communication technologies, studied by 30.9 per cent of the total number of students in 2021.
