Diverse Prices for Melons in Prague Convenience Stores: A Summer Refreshment Expense

As summer arrives, so does the season for one of the most delectable and refreshing fruits, or should we say vegetables? Contrary to popular belief, melons are classified as vegetables rather than fruits. In the Czech Republic, locally grown melons are scarce in stores, and they are typically imported from countries like Spain or Greece.

To gain insights into the cost of melons in convenience stores across Prague, we conducted a comprehensive price mapping. Our findings revealed varying prices across different stores, with the most expensive option being seventy crowns per kilogram for melons imported from Spain.

In the district of Žižkov, a Vietnamese convenience store offered a special price of forty crowns per kilogram, down from the original fifty-five crowns. This price point is comparable to supermarkets, but only limited quantities were available, with just two quarters left. In neighboring Žižkov stores, the price for a kilogram of melon ranged between 50 and 55 crowns. These stores typically stocked around five to six kilograms, resulting in a total cost of approximately three hundred crowns per melon.

In areas like Vinohrady, the price for a kilogram of melon varied, with one store charging fifty crowns and another sixty crowns. The same pricing pattern was observed near Náměstí Míru and Náměstí Jiřího z Poděbrad.

Interestingly, the district of Libeň offered more favorable prices for melons. One store priced 100 grams at 4.50 crowns, resulting in a kilogram cost of 45 crowns. Just a few meters away, two other stores offered melons at a slightly higher price of fifty crowns per kilogram. In a lesser-known convenience store, we even found a small piece of melon priced at thirty crowns.

The city center of Prague is notorious for its tourist-oriented convenience stores that often lack a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables. However, we managed to find one store in the center that carried melons. For a kilogram of Spanish melon, the price was set at seventy crowns. The saleswoman assured us that the melon was not only tasty but also sweet and seedless. For those interested in purchasing a whole melon weighing approximately six kilograms, this summer delicacy would amount to a total cost of 420 crowns.

Therefore, if you’re seeking a refreshing summer snack in Prague, be prepared to encounter different price ranges depending on the location of the convenience store.
