Her Majesty Queen Margaret II she announced in her New Year speech that 14. January 2024, she will step down as the Queen of Denmark and hand over the throne to her son, His Royal Highness Crown Prince Frederick.
The queen is the longest-reigning monarch in Danish history. During her 52 years as the Danish regent, she met several times with the presidents of the Czech Republic, both in Denmark and the Czech Republic.
In May 1991, former Czechoslovakian and later Czech President Václav Havel and his wife Mrs. Olga Havlová met Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrik during their state visit to Denmark. It was one of Havel’s first official trips abroad. During this visit, in the presence of the Queen of Denmark, President Havel was awarded the Sonning Prize at the University of Copenhagen.
Three years later, in October 1994, they visited Queen Margaret II. and Prince Henrik to the Czech Republic, where President Václav Havel received him. They visited Český Krumlov and Prague, where they saw the performance of the Royal Ballet at the Prague State Opera and visited the National Museum in the capital.
Czech President Petr Pavel met with Her Majesty and Crown Prince Frederik in May 2023 in Amalienborg, the Royal Residential Palace in Copenhagen.

H.M. The Queen has been the longest reigning monarch in Danish history. In her 52 years as regent of Denmark, she has met with presidents of the Czech Republic several times in both Denmark and Czechia.
In May 1991, the former Czechoslovak and later Czech President Václav Havel and his wife Mrs. Olga Havlová met Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrik on their state visit to Denmark – one of the earliest ones they did. During his visit, Havel was awarded the Sonning Prize for his contribution to European culture at Copenhagen University where the Queen and Prince Henrik attended by his side.
Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrik visited the Czech Republic in October 1994 where they were received by President Václav Havel. They visited both Český Krumlov and Prague, where they saw a performance by the Royal Ballet in the Prague State Opera and visited the National Museum in the Czech capital.
More recently Czech President Petr Pavel met her Majesty and Crown Prince Frederik in May 2023 at Amalienborg, the Royal Family’s residence, in Copenhagen.
