Energy transformation of the Czech Republic was a major theme of the national conference in the Senate

Under the auspices of Senate Vice-President Jiri Oberfalzer on January 23, 2024, the e-Stat think tank held a national conference entitled Effective Energy in the Main Hall of the Wallenstein Palace. The theme of the event was the energy transformation of the Czech Republic. Prime Minister Petr Fiala, Deputy Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies Karel Havlíček or President of the State Office for Nuclear Safety Dana Drábová were among the main guests.
“The Main role of the Czech Republic in relation to the energy transformation is to set up legislation to ensure, as a matter of priority, cheap and affordable electricity for our citizens and our industry. We must not move in the same direction as Germany, which is gradually putting its nuclear power plants to sleep and trying to meet the demand for power generation by using renewable sources that are, as everyone knows, unreliable. We must ensure that the Green Deal does not cause a deterioration in energy security in the Czech Republic, and that electricity becomes scarce and unreliable,” said Vice-President Jiri Oberfalzer.
“I have long talked about the complete Restart of the Czech Republic, which requires not only the right investments and stable support for strategic projects in the energy sector, but also an overall change in our thinking so that we can accept and adapt sufficiently to the new conditions in Europe and the world. Our task is nothing less than a complete systemic overhaul of energy policy, which needs to be carried out within just a few years. Nuclear power, combined with renewables, will form the basis of our energy. Around 2050, the core should provide about half of our electricity,” said Prime Minister Petr Fiala, adding: “At this point, we are considering up to four new nuclear units in existing locations and at least one modular reactor, which we should be looking forward to beginning of the next decade. Even faster than the core, there will be an increase in renewables, especially in the next few years. At the end of this decade, renewables should produce up to 30% of our electricity, roughly double the proportion from the beginning of our government.”
The conference touched in two blocks on the topic of energy transformation of the Czech Republic and energy security of the Czech Republic. The aim of the event was to popularize the energy transformation with a focus on the fight against energy poverty and to open a debate on the parameters of the energy mix corresponding to the capabilities of the Czech Republic and the needs of its economy in ensuring energy security.

President of the Chamber of Commerce Zdeněk Zajíček and CEO of THE CEZ Group Daniel Beneš also addressed the conference. The speakers also included the Chief Executive of the Energy and Nuclear Resources Section of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, René Neděl, The Chairman of the Energy Regulator Board Stanislav Trávníček, or member of the Board of Directors of ČEPS Pavel Šolc.
