June in the sign of Wheat Prior: Plzeňský Prazdroj revives one of the first modern specials
Prague, June 1, 2023 – Plzeňský Prazdroj and The Town Brewery Domažlice have teamed up for the second time to bring beer lovers an exceptional experience. Together they present the Wheat Prior special, a supremely fermented unfiltered beer with a light aroma and a fresh flavour with fruity notes. The wheat special has been available for beer enthusiasts to sample in more than 1,000 businesses in the Czech Republic and Slovakia since the beginning of June.
Favourite programme of Plzeňský Prazdroj The choice of brewers follows a successful series of collaborations with small breweries. Together with the Town brewery Domažlice, it will offer a top-fermented special called Wheat Prior in June. It was in Domažlice that Prior saw the light of day for the first time three decades ago. The original recipe for this beer was established in the 1990s, when the Home town brewery was still part of the Prazdroj group. Thanks to former brewer Miroslav Sekor and former brewery director Jaroslav Lstibůrk, the original recipe of the Prior was preserved and the beer was re-brewed. Existing brewers Tomáš Pokorný from Plzeňský Prazdroj and Jana Müller from The Town Brewery Domažlice then tuned the recipe together to match the tastes of today’s beer specials fans.
The top-fermented wheat unfilter is prepared from three types of malt – wheat, pilsner and caramel. For hopping, the brewers used the Vital and Žatecký poloraný červeňák varieties, which give the beer a pleasant bitterness and hop aroma. “Thanks to Mr. Sekor, who was a brewer at the brewery for years, and mr. Lstibůrk, the former director, we were able to take inspiration from the original technological process. After a total fine-tuning of the recipe, we cooked a balanced unfiltered eleven with five percent alcohol, which, even with its fruity tinge, is perfect for summer,” says Domažlická sládková Jana Müller.
The characteristics of the beer correspond to wheat beers like Hefeweizen, known from German restaurants and alpine ski resorts. These are typical light colours, offering a fresh flavour with pleasant notes of bananas and cloves. Bitterness is lower, hovering around 14 IBUs, which makes these beers sought after by a number of female beer lovers. Because it is an unfiltered beer, it has its own higher turbidity.
“When creating beer specials we like to draw on the long tradition of Czech beer and the story of the Priory is an integral part of it. And if fellow professionals from smaller breweries can help us in this, we always prefer it. Cooperation with their creative brewers, such as Jana Müller from Domažlic, is always a great experience,” adds Tomáš Drahoňovský, manager of Choice of The Brewers of Plzeňský Prazdroj.
The beer special Pšeničný Prior will be available from the beginning of June in selected companies, whose list is at www.volbasladku.cz.
