Lucia Bílá Theatre presents musical on midlife crisis

The Lucie Bílá Theatre in Prague will present the musical Heart-To-Heart by American songwriter Amanda McBroom on September 28. Its core motive is the midlife crisis. The director of the production is Antonin Procházka. The music of the work with 16 songs was performed by Petr Ožana. Journalists were informed today by the theatre’s principal Lucie Bílá.
The musical has been popular in the Czech Republic since the 1990s, with other musical premieres in the metropolis.
“Heartbeats is one of the few I haven’t seen. But when demand for chamber musicals began, I approached friendly agencies in New York and London for recommendations. Of course, I had to literally wade through a lot of titles, most of which were not suitable for Czech audiences. They were too ‘American.’ I ended up with two titles stuck in that sieve: Motherhood (Moms), which the Lucie Bílá Theatre is already presenting with success, and Heart Break. It appealed to me to the universal theme of the midlife crisis and the fatigue of the age-old marriage,” said the author of the Czech texts, Adam Novák.
The musical’s main character is housewife Annie in White, who celebrates both her 40th birthday and her 20th wedding anniversary on one day. Her husband Steve is portrayed by Denny Ratajski in an altercation with Robert Jícha.
The musical’s author McBroom hit the pop charts with The Rose, which viewers will hear at the end of the show. The song The Rose was first performed in 1979 in a feature film by American singer and actress Bette Midler, which won a Grammy For Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for its performance. The song was eventually picked up by a number of foreign and Czech performers. Jitka Zelenková sang the best-known domestic treatment under the title Narration in the Room.
“The singing will be live, the basis of the music will be from the recording. If it can be arranged with the rights owners, then we would like the songs from the show to be recorded and released on some kind of musical medium,” said heartthrob Petr Malásek, author of the musical arrangement.
The Lucia Bílá Theatre, formerly known as the Ta Fantastika Theatre, is located in the historical centre of Prague, near the Charles Bridge. Last year, the musicals Love is Love and Moms were released here.
In the metropolis, various scenes feature other musicals. The popular musical about the beginnings of the sound film Singing in the Rain premiered on February 12 this year at Prague’s Hybernia Theatre. On Thursday, the Karlín Musical Theatre will present the musical The Bodyguard, based on the 1992 film hit of the same name with Kevin Costner and Whitney Houston in the lead roles. In the romantic love story between the singing star and former Secret Service agent, Rachel stars as Eva Burešová in an altercation with Tereza Mašková, Frank Farmer’s bodyguard Hynek Čermák.
The Broadway Theatre will host the premiere of I, the Dictator, on April 19, by comedian, actor, lyricist and writer Lukas Pavlasek. The music was composed by Chinaski guitarist František Táborský.
