Major Integrated Rescue System Exercise Simulates Train Derailment in Ejpovice Tunnel Near Plzen

In a comprehensive and meticulously planned operation, one of the largest exercises involving all components of the integrated rescue system unfolded as a train derailed within the four-kilometer-long Ejpovice tunnel near Plzen. The simulation, which occurred overnight from Saturday to Sunday, drew inspiration from a real train accident in the Swiss Gotthard tunnel on August 10 of the same year, although the exercise involved a passenger train with 130 individuals onboard.

Providing details of the simulated situation, Pavel Poncar, a spokesperson for the regional firefighters, reported that ten people sustained severe injuries, fifteen were moderately injured, and forty-six experienced minor injuries during the exercise. The simulated accident took place in the middle of the tunnel, approximately two kilometers from each portal, prompting a rapid and coordinated response.

A total of twenty-three units, comprising over a hundred firefighters, arrived at the scene to manage the aftermath of the simulated train derailment. Once the derailed train was located through exploration, the rescue operation commenced. Uninjured individuals were evacuated through safety connections between the tunnel tubes, while the injured were carefully transported to the Chlum portal, where they were handed over to the medical rescue service.

Andrea Divišová from the regional rescue service emphasized the strategic goals of the exercise, aiming to enhance and deepen cooperation among the various components of the integrated rescue system. Additionally, responders were tested in challenging conditions, including darkness and cold, to evaluate their effectiveness in intervention scenarios that mimic real-world challenges.

The comprehensive nature of this exercise not only showcased the preparedness of the integrated rescue system but also served as a valuable opportunity to refine strategies, strengthen collaboration, and ensure the highest level of efficiency in responding to potential emergencies in tunnels and similar environments.
