Outgoing Czech President Says Serbia Can Be Mediator In Ukraine Conflict

Outgoing Czech President Milos Zeman has suggested that Serbia’s refusal to impose sanctions on Russia could make it a suitable mediator in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. During a joint press conference with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, Zeman said China and Turkey were other countries that could also play a mediating role.

Vucic condemned the Russian invasion of Ukraine and announced greater humanitarian aid and support for the country, including participating in the construction of certain cities and towns. Zeman apologized in 2021 for the NATO bombing of the former Yugoslavia in 1999, an act which Vucic said was remembered by the people of Serbia. Zeman’s successor, Petr Pavel, was elected on January 28 and has strong support for NATO and the EU, as well as aid for Ukraine.
