Prague Adjusts Petřín Park Revitalization Project After Resident Pressure
The City of Prague has announced revisions to the original project proposal for the Petřín Tower area’s new park design in response to concerns expressed by local residents. The Petřín Park Revitalization Project aims to address the issue of uncontrolled water seepage into the groundwater from an aging pipeline system that is nearly two centuries old.
The project’s objectives include not only addressing the water seepage problem but also enhancing the overall appearance of the park. This involves ensuring proper and sufficient watering, restoring historical ponds and pools, as well as constructing new ones. Dan Frantík, the head of the Greenery Care Department at the City of Prague, anticipates that the project will be completed by mid-June next year.
The City of Prague has actively engaged residents in the preparation phase of the Petřín Park Revitalization Project. During a meeting with locals in the park area, the city council provided updates on the project’s development. Approximately 40 citizens, along with representatives from the city council and the first district, attended the meeting.
Importantly, the Petřín Park Revitalization Project aims to minimize disruptions to park visitors. The city council plans to work on a small area at a time, and the majority of the work will be carried out manually since heavy machinery cannot be used. Most of the ponds will be located away from the main paths.
In addition to the Petřín Park Revitalization Project, the Rose Garden Revitalization Project was launched in November of last year and is slated for completion by the end of August this year. This initiative includes replacing impermeable concrete and asphalt surfaces with permeable cobblestone surfaces and granite paving. Furthermore, a new sewage system will be installed for the Štefánik Observatory, and the existing water supply pipeline will be replaced.
Visitors to the park can look forward to new drinking fountains and a misting system. The project will also involve planting 27 deciduous trees, approximately 350 shrubs, and expanding the rose beds with 330 additional collection roses.
Both the Petřín Park Revitalization Project and the Rose Garden Revitalization Project are part of the City of Prague’s commitment to preserving Petřínské sady, which is considered the lungs and a showcase of the metropolis, according to Terezie Radoměřská, the mayor of Prague 1. Mayor Radoměřská emphasized the city council’s efforts to involve residents in discussions about the park’s present and future and to relay the outcomes to the city council, despite the fact that the care of Petřínské sady falls under the jurisdiction of the capital rather than Prague 1.
The City of Prague actively facilitates public debates and advocates for the legitimate interests of its citizens. Martin Motl, Chairman of the Committee on Participation, Participatory Budgeting, Public Space, and Grant Programs for Prague 1, emphasized the city council’s dedication to advocating for citizens’ legitimate interests.
