Prague Approves Investment Plan to Revitalize Ponds and Water Features, Enhancing Recreational Spaces
Prague has greenlit an investment plan aimed at rejuvenating Prosek and Bubec ponds, as well as enhancing water features at Letna. This project seeks to transform these areas into inviting recreation spots, with Prosek and Bubec ponds evolving into lively community spaces, while Letna’s fountains will contribute to the ambiance of the popular meeting point by the Metronome.
The city views these water bodies as pivotal components of the landscape that align with its climate plan and contribute to local climate cooling. The endeavor is part of Prague’s endeavor to reconnect residents with the city’s natural water resources, aiming to provide new seating and grilling zones at Bubec Pond. Meanwhile, Prosek Pond is slated to undergo a facelift, including the introduction of a new spring and the restoration of its surroundings.
Letna, a cherished public space, will see the addition of two fountains and other water features to offer more relaxing spots, especially during sweltering summer days. The investment plan has received the nod from the city council and will be executed by Prague’s environmental and climate plan office.
Bubec Pond, nestled in Reporyje, has fallen into disrepair with an inefficient drainage system, resulting in water overflow onto roads during heavy rains. The proposed reconstruction encompasses a revamped drainage network, a safety overflow mechanism, and embankment repairs. The project also includes the rejuvenation of the Oresky Stream, which supplies water to the pond, as well as the creation of water access points and a barbecue area. The city is investing approximately 10 million Czech koruna into this venture.
Prosek Pond in Prague 9 will undergo a renovation, including the installation of a new drainage system to enhance water flow management. The existing steep concrete embankment, which poses challenges to various animals, will be replaced with a gently sloping stone-lined embankment in the upper section, allowing water birds and amphibians to easily access the shore. The renewal is projected to cost nearly 3 million Czech koruna.
For the Letna water features project, plans involve establishing an electrical connection to the pumping station, constructing a rainwater drainage system to redirect water from the Metronome to the pond, and commencing preparatory work on two fountains and a water feature at the western arm of the former Stalin Monument. This initiative is estimated to require 15 million Czech koruna for completion.
The revitalization will be led by the Lesy Hlavniho Mesta Prahy organization and funded through the City of Prague’s environmental protection department’s capital expenditures. This investment underscores the city’s commitment to conserving and enhancing its natural environment, expanding recreational opportunities, and fostering a more sustainable and climate-friendly urban setting.
