Prague City Council Invests 29 Million CZK to Enhance Pedestrian Safety with Illuminated Crossings

The Prague City Council has announced a substantial investment of 29 million CZK to install illuminated crossings throughout the city, as part of its comprehensive plan for this year. The initiative aims to enhance pedestrian safety by improving visibility at intersections and pedestrian crossings. A total of 53 corners will be equipped with new lighting, gradually covering fifteen city districts.

The Technology of the Capital City of Prague (THMP) has confirmed the completion of the first installations on Ústřední and Archimédova Streets in Prague 15. The decision to implement this project was driven by the council’s commitment to improve pedestrian visibility for drivers, thereby reducing the risk of accidents.

Zdeněk Hřib (Pirates), the First Deputy Mayor of the City of Prague for Transport, highlighted the importance of improved visibility in ensuring safe movement in traffic. He stated, “For safe movement in traffic, it is crucial to see and, above all, be seen. By illuminating the crossings, we improve conditions for both pedestrians and drivers. This enables drivers to spot pedestrians earlier and avoid unnecessary collisions.”

The plan to enhance visibility at crossings will be executed across most city districts. Illuminated corners will be introduced at key locations such as the entrance to Letná Park, near the Czech Technical University (ČVUT), Jiřího z Poděbrad Square, and other busy streets with tram traffic, including Francouzská, Seifertova, and Střešovická.

The newly installed lighting fixtures incorporate flat glass and directional optics, minimizing nighttime light pollution. The LED light temperature has been carefully selected to ensure optimal color rendering, which is essential for enhancing pedestrian safety in road traffic.

In addition to constructing new crossings, THMP will provide service and maintenance for over 1,300 existing illuminated corners throughout the city. These illuminations will be activated one hour before public lighting and switched off one hour later, aligning with the city’s overall lighting schedule.

The Prague City Council’s investment in illuminated crossings reflects its commitment to improving road safety and ensuring the well-being of pedestrians. The project is expected to have a significant positive impact on reducing accidents and enhancing visibility for both drivers and pedestrians. The council encourages all residents and visitors to exercise caution and respect the enhanced safety measures implemented at these illuminated crossings.
