Prague closes river embankments and Čertovka canal to prevent flooding
The city of Prague in the Czech Republic has taken preventive measures against flooding by closing its river embankments and the gates of the Čertovka canal. The decision was made in consultation with meteorologists and flood prevention authorities due to heavy rainfall and the risk of a rise in the level of the Vltava River. The aim is to prevent the flow rate from exceeding 450 cubic meters per second, which would trigger the first stage of flood activity.
The city’s press release stated that the authorities have been in contact with relevant agencies since Friday to monitor the situation and take preventive measures to protect the lives and property of the city’s residents. The gates of the Čertovka canal were tested earlier in the week and are now fully operational in case of flooding. The city’s mayor emphasized the importance of prevention measures in protecting the city’s inhabitants and property.
The closure of the embankments and the Čertovka canal affects areas in Prague 1, 2, and 5. Some events scheduled on the embankments have been canceled or curtailed due to the decision. Ferry services will also be disrupted if the flow rate exceeds the threshold for the first stage of flood activity.
While there are concerns that further downpours could occur in the coming days, the flow rate of the Vltava River is regulated by dams along the river, which are prepared for further rainfall. However, additional flood prevention measures will be necessary if the flow rate exceeds 550 cubic meters per second.
The decision to close the river embankments and the Čertovka Canal in Prague is a necessary precautionary measure to prevent flooding. The authorities are closely monitoring the situation and are prepared to take further action if necessary. Despite the challenges posed by heavy rainfall, Prague’s flood prevention measures are effective, and the city’s residents can be assured that their safety and well-being are a top priority.
