Prague Launches Campaign to Safeguard Citizens Against Hazardous Waste Disposal

In recent years, Prague residents have demonstrated commendable diligence in sorting metal packaging; however, challenges persist as various non-metallic wastes, particularly small pressure containers such as flammable sprays, gas cartridges, and tourist stoves, find their way into grey containers. The potential hazards associated with these items, including damage to waste collection equipment, sorting lines, and the risk of injury to individuals, have prompted the City of Prague to initiate a comprehensive campaign to educate citizens on proper waste disposal practices.

The crux of the issue lies in the incorrect disposal of small spray cans commonly used for everyday items such as hairsprays, deodorants, air fresheners, repellents, and protective gases. These items, when erroneously placed in metal waste containers, pose significant risks due to their flammable nature. The containers bear a fire symbol, indicating their susceptibility to heat, mechanical damage, punctures, or proximity to fire, which, if ignored, can have fatal consequences.

A pivotal incident on October 20, 2023, at Prague Services on Pod Šancemi underscored the severity of the issue. An accumulation of unemptied spray in the metal packaging press led to an explosion and subsequent fire, resulting in extensive damage and a month-long disruption of services. Fortunately, no serious injuries occurred, prompting swift action from Prague Services and the city authorities.

Following the incident, Prague swiftly launched a public awareness campaign, emphasizing the proper disposal of small pressure containers. The campaign, aptly titled “Used Sprays Belong in Mixed Waste,” aims to educate citizens about the risks of incorrect waste disposal and urges caution when handling pressure vessels. Measures include manual removal of flammable sprays by workers and tightened protocols to prevent future incidents.

In collaboration with Prague Services, the campaign employs a multi-faceted approach encompassing outdoor advertisements, animations, leaflets, posters, and an extensive online presence on social networks and city portals. The proactive dissemination of information seeks to ensure citizens are well-informed about the dangers associated with improper waste disposal and the crucial role they play in maintaining a safe waste management system.

Prague Services, while emphasizing the dangers of containers with compressed gases, assures citizens that proper disposal practices, especially of unemptied small sprays in black bins for mixed municipal waste, will mitigate risks. The campaign is not only an effort to safeguard citizens but also to protect vital waste management infrastructure from potential damage, fostering a culture of responsible waste disposal in the city.
