Prague’s Iconic Staroměstský Orloj: A Monthly Siren Test Disruption Amidst Timekeeping Beauty

Prague’s Staroměstský orloj, a cherished and centuries-old landmark, draws millions of visitors each year. However, on the first Wednesday of every month since October 2002, this iconic clock transforms into a momentary disruption for tourists due to a routine siren test in the Czech Republic. Lasting for 140 seconds, the siren’s distinctive and fluctuating tone reverberates through the city streets, alerting everyone in its vicinity.

Before the test commences, a pre-announcement serves as a cautionary signal: “Test of sirens, test of sirens, test of sirens. Test of sirens will continue within several minutes. Test of sirens, test of sirens, test of sirens.” This auditory warning, delivered in both Czech and English, ensures that locals and tourists are prepared for the impending test.

Although the siren test has become an established practice, there have been exceptions. In March 2015, the sirens sounded a day later than usual as a mark of respect for the victims of a tragic shooting in Uherský Brod. Additionally, last year’s siren test was canceled due to the unfolding situation in Ukraine and the arrival of refugees, with authorities seeking to prevent potential panic among the population.

While the temporary disruption caused by the siren test may momentarily affect the experience of tourists in Prague, it is an integral part of the city’s preparedness and safety measures. The Staroměstský orloj, frequently crowded with visitors who gather to witness the hourly performance of its twelve apostle figures, can surprise tourists when the siren test coincides with their visit. Some may find themselves startled, even though the pre-announcement is broadcast in English.

“We can come back in an hour,” quipped a man within a group of tourists, displaying a good-natured attitude towards the interruption. Many tourists swiftly adapt to the unexpected moment, switching from recording videos to capturing photographs of the remarkable clock.

Despite occasional disruptions, the Staroměstský orloj remains an architectural gem that continues to captivate and enchant visitors from around the world. Its fame extends even beyond the renowned Orloj in Olomouc. While the Olomouc clock has implemented adjustments to mitigate disturbances caused by the siren test, the Prague clock adheres to its regular schedule.

The monthly siren test beneath the Orloj serves as a reminder of the importance of preparedness and safety measures within society. As tourists become spectators of this unique monthly event, they become a part of an experience that weaves together history, tradition, and unexpected moments. So, if you happen to find yourself in Prague and encounter the siren test beneath the Orloj, embrace the interruption and capture a memory that encapsulates the dynamic nature of this iconic landmark.
