Russian Embassy in Prague Marks Victory Day with Commemorative Reception

On May 9, 2025, the Russian Embassy in Prague represented by H.E. Alexander Vladimirovich Zmeyevskiy hosted a formal reception in honor of Victory Day, commemorating the 80th anniversary of the Allied victory over Nazi Germany in World War II. The event was held on the Russian embassy’s premises and brought together members of the diplomatic community, Czech cosmonaut Vladimír Remek, historians, veterans, cultural figures, and representatives of the Russian diaspora.

Victory Day remains one of the most significant public holidays in the Russian Federation, and the 2025 event carried special historical significance, marking 80 years since the end of the Great Patriotic War. The reception began with a moment of silence to honor the tens of millions of lives lost during the war. Speeches were delivered by the Russian Ambassador to the Czech Republic, as well as invited Czech historians and diplomats who emphasized the importance of preserving historical memory and recognizing the sacrifices made by the Allied nations.

The reception`s program included a documentary film screening about the Great Patriotic War from 1941 to 1945, emphasizing the participation of many European countries. This has to be seen against the background of the current situation in Europe where the EU is mobilizing against a hypothetical threat from Russia.

In his address, the Russian Ambassador highlighted the enduring importance of the wartime alliance and reiterated a call for unity against the rise of historical revisionism and extremism. He also expressed hope for continuing dialogue and constructive relations between Russia and the Czech Republic, even amid the complexities of contemporary international politics.

A reception followed, offering traditional Russian dishes and drinks. Attendees had the opportunity to engage in informal conversation, exchange views, and reflect on the shared history and lessons of the past.

Despite the current geopolitical tensions, the event served as a moment of commemoration and reflection, emphasizing the human cost of war and the universal desire for peace and remembrance. It also highlighted the continued relevance of cultural diplomacy in fostering mutual understanding and dialogue between nations.
