Severe Glaze Ice Grips Czech Republic, Triggering Hazardous Driving Conditions
The Czech Republic is grappling with a formidable challenge posed by severe glaze ice, leading to treacherous driving conditions across various regions of the country. Moravia, Silesia, Vysočina, Hradec Králové, and Pardubice reported difficulties on the roads due to icy conditions on Monday evening. Meteorologists had issued a warning, which remained in effect until Tuesday night.
Widespread ice formation was reported across much of Moravia, with meteorologists cautioning about an impending band of more intense and sustained precipitation approaching from the west. Surface temperatures remained below zero in most areas, exacerbating the situation. Meteorologists advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel in affected areas and, if possible, to stay indoors. Silesia, especially its northern parts, was highlighted as an area where local ice formation would persist.
In South Moravia, the police initially handled a relatively low number of traffic incidents or weather-related events until the situation took a dramatic turn before seven in the evening. Subsequently, they received around thirty reports related to glaze ice by half-past eight in the evening.
Public transportation services were also impacted by the icy conditions. The Integrated Transport System of the South Moravian Region reported issues throughout the region, with tram and trolleybus lines in Brno being constrained due to frost affecting the trolley system.
The Olomouc region experienced ice formation on roads in certain areas as well. Drivers reported frozen roads in Olomouc and the vicinity of Prostějov, particularly in Konice. The road administration dispatcher explained that rain falling on the roads was freezing upon contact with the road surface, contributing to hazardous driving conditions.
Meteorologists had underscored the critical nature of the weather situation, emphasizing the need for caution and prudence among residents to navigate the challenges posed by the severe glaze ice.
