Supreme Court Chief Warns Against Democracy Erosion and Disinformation Influence on 30th Anniversary

Petr Angyalossy, the head of the Supreme Court, delivered a stark warning today at an international expert conference commemorating the 30th anniversary of the Supreme Court in the independent Czech Republic. The conference focused on the vital role of the highest courts in ensuring effective legal protection. Angyalossy cautioned against attempts to weaken democracy, undermine human rights, and the pervasive influence of disinformation in contemporary society.

Highlighting the critical role of the judiciary in upholding the fundamental values of the rule of law, Angyalossy emphasized that the courts must remain a steadfast and unwavering pillar, even when other branches of government falter. His words resonate at a time when democratic institutions worldwide grapple with challenges to their integrity and effectiveness.

Marketa Pekarova Adamova, the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies and a member of TOP 09, underscored the significance of the Supreme Court in ensuring the predictability and consistency of judicial decisions within the country. She argued that this, in turn, bolsters public trust in the justice system and the democratic process as a whole.

Distinguished figures from the legal community, including Koen Lenaerts, the President of the European Court of Justice, were present at the conference, reflecting the international importance of this milestone for the Czech judiciary.

Established on January 1, 1993, following the peaceful dissolution of Czechoslovakia, the Czech Supreme Court relocated from Prague to Brno later that year. Over the past three decades, it has played a crucial role in safeguarding the principles of democracy and the rule of law in the country.

The court’s management has reported that it is currently in a relatively robust state, with a noticeable reduction in the duration of legal proceedings. Looking ahead, the management is considering changes in legal regulations to expand the possibilities for filing appeals, even in areas where it is currently restricted. Additionally, they aim to streamline the process of rejecting certain appeals more swiftly and efficiently, ensuring that the court operates effectively while upholding the highest standards of justice.

As the Czech Republic commemorates 30 years of its independent Supreme Court, the commitment to preserving democratic values, protecting human rights, and combating disinformation remains a pressing priority, echoing the sentiments expressed by Chief Justice Angyalossy.
