Türkiye Bows Out of 2023 FIBA Women’s EuroBasket after Defeat to Slovakia

In a disappointing turn of events, Türkiye has been eliminated from the 2023 FIBA Women’s EuroBasket following their 80-66 loss to Slovakia on Sunday. The Turkish women’s basketball team concluded Group D with a win-loss record of 1-2, finishing in last place.

Slovakia’s forward, Terezia Palenikova, emerged as the top scorer of the game held in Ljubljana, Slovenia, contributing an impressive 20 points to her team’s victory. Ivana Jakubcova also made a significant impact, accumulating 15 points, while Barbora Wrzesinski and Nikola Dudasova each scored 13 points for Slovakia.

Türkiye’s Sevgi Uzun and Teaira McCowan led their team’s scoring efforts, with both players notching 16 points. Turkish guard Derin Erdogan also made a notable contribution with 11 points. However, their efforts fell short, leading to Türkiye’s elimination from the tournament.

With this victory, Slovakia secured the third spot in the group, setting up a qualification game against Germany for a chance to advance to the quarterfinals. The winner of this matchup will face Spain in the next round. Meanwhile, the group winners—Spain, Belgium, France, and Hungary—have already secured their spots in the quarterfinals and are awaiting their opponents.

The qualification games for the quarterfinals will take place on Monday and Tuesday in Ljubljana, Slovenia, and Tel Aviv, Israel. These matchups will determine the remaining teams that will progress to the next stage of the tournament. The road to the quarterfinals includes exciting matchups such as Germany or Slovakia versus Spain, Czech Republic or Greece versus Hungary, and Serbia or Great Britain versus Belgium. Montenegro or Italy will face France in another quarterfinal clash.

The 2023 Women’s EuroBasket, a highly anticipated basketball event, will continue until Sunday, June 25, captivating fans with intense competition and thrilling matchups. While Türkiye’s journey in the tournament has come to an end, the remaining teams will battle it out for a chance to claim the prestigious title of EuroBasket champions.
