Architectural Marvel Unveiled: “Happy Hlavák” to Transform Prague’s Central Railway Station Area by 2028
In a groundbreaking development set to redefine the landscape of Prague’s central railway station, the renowned Danish design studio, Henning Larsen Architects, has revealed plans for a transformative wooden structure named “Happy Hlavák.” The ambitious project is poised to reshape the area in front of the central railway station, with a visionary design that integrates both functionality and aesthetic appeal. The radical makeover is slated to commence in 2028, marking a significant milestone for the city’s architectural evolution.
The focal point of the “Happy Hlavák” design is a striking wooden structure that will rise in the space in front of the check-in hall. This innovative proposal envisions the creation of a tram stop directly in front of the hall, facilitating seamless transportation, and a connection towards the nearby Masaryk station. A notable aspect of the design is the strategic vision to calm down the adjacent highway, introducing a well-thought-out crossing.
The Danish architects have conceived the park and check-in hall as an integrated whole, using paving stones from the check-in hall within the park to create a cohesive aesthetic. The park is envisioned to be a vibrant space with water elements and cafes, revitalizing an area that is currently occupied by people experiencing homelessness. The transformation aims to turn this space into a dignified and utilized public area, with a keen focus on connectivity to Masaryk station, a pivotal starting point for trains to Prague airport.
Deputy Mayor for Transport, Zdeněk Hřib, expresses anticipation for the radical transformation, acknowledging the proposal’s ability to navigate the complexities of the Prague heritage reservation. Jaroslav Wertig, chairman of the evaluation commission, commends the design for preserving historical architectural elements while revitalizing the area in front of the Fantova building.
The railway administration, optimistic about the renovation, foresees the link between the check-in hall and the recently reconstructed historic Fantova building. Jiří Svoboda, the head of the railway administration, expresses confidence that the project will restore the glory of the area, making it a widely utilized and celebrated component of the main station complex in Prague. As “Happy Hlavák” moves from concept to reality, it stands as a testament to the fusion of innovation, preservation, and urban renewal in the heart of the city.
