Czech Chamber of Deputies Concludes Final Session of 2023, Highlighted by Tax Treaties and Foster Parent Recruitment Amendment
The final session of the Chamber of Deputies, the lower house of the Czech parliament, concluded today, wrapping up legislative activities for the year shortly before 2 pm. Members of Parliament (MPs) are scheduled to reconvene in mid-January 2024 for the first regular session of the new year.
The conclusion of this session was marked by a proposal from Marek Benda, the head of the Civic Democrat (ODS) deputy group, who suggested the removal of remaining items from the session agenda. This proposal received unanimous support from all deputy groups, leading to the efficient closure of the session.
Among the notable omissions from today’s discussions were the annual reports on the activities and management of key media entities, including Czech Television, Czech Radio, and CTK, along with the report on the long-term sustainability of public finances.
As the Chamber of Deputies concludes its activities for the year, the Senate will continue its sessions until the year-end. Notable items on the Senate’s agenda include the approval of a bill modifying fees for early mortgage repayment and a bill aimed at streamlining the construction of deep radioactive waste repositories, slated for consideration on Thursday.
During today’s session, the Chamber of Deputies approved three treaties addressing double taxation, forging international agreements with Sri Lanka, the United Arab Emirates, and Rwanda. Additionally, a treaty facilitating police cooperation with Vietnam received parliamentary support. MPs also backed the first reading of an amendment designed to bolster the recruitment of new foster parents, emphasizing the government’s commitment to addressing social and familial needs.
The efficient and unanimous decision-making process at the close of this session underscores the collaborative efforts within the Czech parliament, setting the stage for a resumption of legislative activities in 2024.
