Czech Government Allocates 215.8 Billion Koruna for Supersonic Aviation Maintenance and Development Until 2036

In a strategic move to bolster the country’s supersonic aviation capabilities, the Czech government has greenlit the allocation of 215.8 billion koruna, outlining a comprehensive plan titled “Maintenance and Development of Supersonic Aviation Capabilities II.” The funding is earmarked for various initiatives, including the leasing of Gripen fighter jets until 2035, the acquisition of 24 F-35 aircraft, and investment in immovable infrastructure.

The significant financial commitment also encompasses provisions for potential exchange rate fluctuations and other financial and material risks. While the total amount is capped, it is designed to cover a range of essential expenses without exhaustive utilization.

The government’s decision in September to purchase 24 fifth-generation F-35 aircraft is a pivotal component of this plan, with a budget of 150 billion koruna allocated for the acquisition. Defense Minister Jana Černochová clarified that this budget encompasses all associated expenses, such as infrastructure development, fuel, and personnel preparation, necessary for the operational integration of the F-35s in the Czech Republic.

Anticipated to be operational by 2029, the F-35s are slated to replace the existing fleet, including 14 leased JAS-39 Gripen fighters and, in the future, 24 L-159 aircraft. The phased introduction is projected to culminate with all 24 F-35s stationed in the Czech Republic by 2035.

Simultaneously, negotiations with Sweden are underway to extend the lease of 14 Gripen fighter jets until 2035. Currently costing 1.7 billion koruna annually, the existing Gripen lease is set to conclude in 2027. This transitional period with the Gripen fleet aligns with the phased integration of the F-35s, ensuring a seamless transition without compromising the country’s supersonic aviation capabilities.

The substantial financial commitment underscores the Czech Republic’s commitment to modernize and fortify its air force, aligning with global advancements in aviation technology and security needs.
