Czech President Petr Pavel Enhances Bilateral Ties with French President Emmanuel Macron During Paris Talks

In a diplomatic tête-à-tête, Czech President Petr Pavel engaged in discussions with his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron at the Elysee Palace in Paris yesterday, solidifying the robust relationship between the two nations. The approximately two-hour visit featured a one-on-one meeting following a joint statement to the media, emphasizing the depth of collaboration between Prague and Paris.

Addressing journalists after the meeting, President Pavel underscored the elevated status of Czech-French relations, citing alignment on crucial global issues such as the conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East. Beyond geopolitical matters, the leaders delved into collaborative efforts in energy, culture, and science during their private discussions.

“I appreciate the openness with which we conducted the talks. It was a practical demonstration that our relations are at a high level,” remarked President Pavel. The agenda encompassed not only pressing issues like the war in Ukraine but also broader aspects such as EU enlargement, energy cooperation, and migration.

Highlighting the shared commitment to supporting Ukraine, President Pavel emphasized the need for sustained assistance to help the country withstand Russian pressure. While specific aid details were not disclosed, France has been actively supporting Ukraine’s defense against Russian aggression, providing military equipment and essential resources.

President Pavel, a retired general and former chairman of NATO’s Military Committee, expressed concerns about Europe’s lacking capabilities in intelligence and strategic logistics for self-defense. He noted Europe’s historical resignation from developing these crucial capabilities and urged a renewed focus on bolstering defensive capabilities.

The Czech Republic’s proactive stance in supporting Ukraine was acknowledged, with the country being one of the first to provide concrete military aid following the Russian invasion. The visit, part of a planned two-day itinerary, will also include talks with French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne and National Assembly Speaker Yael Braun-Pivet.

Highlighting the economic dimension, President Pavel disclosed that France is one of the top five investors in the Czech Republic. The significance of French company EDF in bidding for the construction of a new nuclear unit at the Dukovany power plant further underscores the multifaceted nature of Czech-French collaboration. During discussions on the NUWARD small modular reactor project, EDF reportedly praised the Czech industry, indicating potential advancements in the energy sector.
