Czech Republic Witnesses Significant Decline in Gas Consumption, Marking an 11% Year-on-Year Drop
The Czech Republic has experienced a noteworthy decrease in gas consumption, with statistics from the Czech Republic’s Energy Regulatory Office (ERÚ) revealing a consistent decline in usage over three quarters of the year. Czechs utilized just over 51 terawatt-hours of gas during this period, indicating an 11% reduction compared to the previous year. The decline in gas consumption has been attributed to favorable weather conditions and the implementation of energy-saving measures.
Throughout the first nine months of the year, the reduction in electricity usage has also been evident, showing a 4.8% decrease. This decline in gas and electricity consumption is reflective of a broader trend influenced by factors such as weather patterns and conservation efforts.
The decline in gas consumption has been observed consistently across all calendar months in the current year. In the third quarter alone, there was a substantial decrease of more than 11%, equating to a 4% reduction when adjusted for long-term temperature conditions. The ERÚ office acknowledges the impact of warmer weather, with the third quarter experiencing temperatures 1.8 degrees above the long-term average. However, the noticeable decline is also credited to the successful implementation of energy-saving measures by officials, businesses, and households.
Businesses led the way in reducing gas consumption during the third quarter, achieving a significant year-on-year decrease of 34.5%. Households followed suit, reducing their gas consumption by more than 28%, while large-scale consumers marked a 5.7% reduction in gas usage.
The most significant drop in gas consumption was recorded in September, where year-on-year consumption decreased by over a fifth. The warmer-than-usual weather in September, with a deviation of 3.4 degrees from the long-term temperature average, delayed the onset of the heating season.
The downward trend in consumption extends to electricity usage as well, with a 4.8% reduction observed over three-quarters of the current year. Czechs consumed 42.76 terawatt-hours of electricity during this period, highlighting a broader shift in energy dynamics in the country.
