Czech trade union leader Josef Stredula withdraws presidential bid, endorses Danuse Nerudova

Josef Stredula, the head of the CMKOS trade union organization in the Czech Republic, has withdrawn his candidacy for president and endorsed Danuse Nerudova, a former rector at Mendel University. Stredula made the announcement during a televised debate five days before the first round of the presidential election.

Stredula had previously announced his candidacy in May 2022 and had the support of 11 senators and over 60,000 citizens. Nerudova, who is one of the three leading candidates in the election, tweeted that she appreciated Stredula’s support and would do her best to represent his voters. The first round of voting will take place on January 13-14, with a second round between the top two candidates scheduled for two weeks later.
