Complications caused by unsafe abortions lead to the hospitalization of millions of women and adolescent girls worldwide each year. Restricting access to abortion does not reduce the number of abortions – it just makes them more dangerous.

Globally, Denmark is advocating for access to safe abortion and the right of women and girls to decide with whom and how many children they want to have.

50 years ago Denmark decided to secure legal and free access to abortion. The 1973 abortion law was an important step towards gender equality and bodily autonomy in Denmark.

Every year, complications from unsafe abortions lead to millions of women and teenage girls being hospitalised worldwide. Restricting access to abortion does not reduce the number of abortions – it just tends to make them unsafe.

Denmark works for access to safe abortion globally and for the right for women and girls to decide with whom and how many children they want.
