Today, 15 September, is the annual International Day of Democracy. The International Day of Democracy is a United Nations initiative which aims to provide an opportunity to review the state of democracy in the world. This year, Democracy Day will focus on the importance of media freedom to democracy, peace, and delivering on the Sustainable Development Goals.

Free media and journalists play an important role as independent sources of information and watchdogs. The Dutch government supports the independent position of journalists and media organisations worldwide in a variety of ways.
