Extreme Cold Grips Czech Republic as Meteorologists Issue Warnings for Freezing Temperatures

Prague, Czech Republic – Meteorologists in the Czech Republic have issued updated warnings as the country braces for intense cold, predicting freezing temperatures across the entire nation on Tuesday night. The forecast indicates temperatures dropping below -12°C, with the northeast region potentially experiencing even more severe conditions, plummeting below -18°C.

Meteorologists note a lower probability of intense cold in the western parts of the country, prompting the cancellation and subsequent reinstatement of warnings for these areas on Monday. The fluctuating conditions highlight the dynamic nature of the weather patterns.

On Tuesday night, temperatures at some stations dipped below -20°C, with the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (CHMI) recording the lowest temperature at the Osoblaha station at -20.8°C. Other locations, such as Zlaté Hory (-20.3°C) and Nové Heřminovy and Kvilda-Perla (both reporting -20.2°C), experienced similarly frigid conditions.

The chilling trend is expected to persist into Thursday night, with temperatures likely to fall below -12 °C in specific regions. Consequently, warnings will be in effect for the Vysočina, South Bohemia, Olomouc, Moravian-Silesian regions, and parts of the Plzeň region.

While the nation grapples with the harsh cold, concerns also linger over manipulations on the reservoirs of the Vltava cascade. Flood alerts are active in Prague and Český Krumlov, where the Vltava is expected to hover around the third degree of flood activity until further notice. The combination of freezing temperatures and ongoing flood alerts poses challenges for residents and authorities alike, necessitating heightened vigilance and preparedness to navigate the adverse weather conditions. The situation underscores the importance of monitoring and responding to meteorological warnings to mitigate potential risks and ensure the safety of the population.
