GB Boxers return from Czech Republic with five medals with Eccles winning gold
BOXERS from Great Britain will return from the Grand Prix in the Czech Republic with five medals, including gold for Rosie Eccles.
Wales’ Taylor Bevan picked silver whilst Gemma Richardson, Jack Dryden and Harris Akbar all earned bronze.
The only British boxer to step through the ropes on finals days was Rosie Eccles.
The welterweight was crowned champion via split decision (3:2) after she beat USA’s Morelle McCane in what was he fourth bout in as many days.
On her way to the final, the 2022 Commonwealth Games gold medallist secured victories against Beatriz Soarez (Brazil), current European champion Stefanie Von Berge (Germany) and Maria Bova (Ukraine).
Taylor Bevan was the only member of the squad to earn a silver medal after the reaching his respective final but was unable to go for gold due as he was withdrawn from competition as an injury precaution.
On his way to the light-heavyweight final he firstly beat teammate Ramtin Musah before an impressive victory of the 2021 world champion, Rahim Gonzales of the USA.
After six bouts in 10 days, which saw her win gold at the Cesme tournament just last week, Gemma Richardson had to settle for bronze as she was beaten in the lightweight semi-final by Tokyo 2020 gold medallist Kellie Harrington of Ireland.
The other bronzes were picked up by featherweight Jack Dryden, who won his two opening bouts against Sweden’s Nebil Ibrahim and Argentina’s Angel Palacios as well light-middleweight Harris Akbar who beat Slovakia’s Ladislav Horvath in his quarter-final.
Both GB boxers were scheduled to compete in semi-final clashes against Oleh Chuliacheivev of Ukraine and the host nation’s Milos Bartl respectively but were withdrawn from competition, like Bevan due to injury precautions.
Six other members of the squad competed in Usti nad Labem but just missed out on the medal stages.
They were light-flyweight Demie-Jade Resztan, flyweight Hamza Mehmood, light-welterweight Joe Tyers, light-middleweight Garan Croft, light-heavyweight Ramtin Musah and super-heavyweight Delicious Orie.
