Growing Apathy: 20% of Czechs Tune Out Political News, Marking Two-Decade High
A recent survey conducted by the Center for Public Opinion Research (CVVM) reveals a significant shift in the political engagement landscape in the Czech Republic, with 20% of Czechs now admitting to never following political events in the media. This marks an 11-percentage point increase from the figures recorded in 2020, signifying the highest proportion in the past two decades.
Despite the rise in disengagement, following political issues in the media remains the most prevalent form of political involvement among the Czech public. This surpasses other activities such as discussing politics with friends, which is the second most common engagement. Surprisingly, working for a political party emerges as the least frequent form of political participation.
The survey further unveils that 27% of citizens frequently keep abreast of political information in the media, while around a quarter does so occasionally. A similar percentage engages in discussions about politics with friends, with one-tenth of respondents frequently participating, 29% occasionally, and one-third rarely.
Approximately two-fifths of respondents are involved to some extent in public affairs, with fewer engaging in other political activities. Thirty percent of respondents reported participating in online political discussions, 28% have met politicians, and one-fifth attempt to influence their friends’ voting decisions. A comparable share of respondents attend political rallies, while only 6% claimed to have worked for a political party.
The survey authors note that the responses to most questions have remained relatively stable over time, except for the notable fluctuation in the long-term trend of following politics in the media.
Regarding participation in public events, the survey highlights that Czechs are most involved in sports organizations (26%), followed by civic and hobby associations, and charities (less than 20%). Only a minority participate in activities related to professional associations, municipal self-governance, trade unions, churches, and political parties.
CVVM conducted the survey on a sample of 900 Czech residents aged over 15 from the end of September to the beginning of December last year, providing a comprehensive snapshot of the evolving political engagement landscape in the country.
