Plzeň Adopts Silent Fireworks to Enhance Animal Welfare and Reduce Noise Pollution
In a notable move towards prioritizing animal welfare and curbing noise pollution, the city of Plzeň in the Czech Republic has embraced the use of silent fireworks for public events. This decision reflects a commitment to safeguarding the well-being of animals, seniors, children, and families who may be sensitive to the traditional loud noises and explosions associated with conventional fireworks displays.
The implementation of silent fireworks was successfully tested during the city’s celebrations on October 28, marking a shift from the conventional pyrotechnic displays. This innovative approach will also be adopted for the inauguration of the Christmas markets and New Year’s events. Mayor Roman Zarzycký applauded the decision as a considerate solution that caters to both pyrotechnic enthusiasts and the inhabitants of the city.
Karel Makoň from the Plzeň animal rescue station welcomed the move as a positive step, acknowledging that while the ideal scenario would be the abolition of fireworks altogether, making them silent is a step in the right direction. Makoň emphasized the impact of loud fireworks on animals, noting the annual challenge of dealing with numerous dead or injured animals after New Year’s Eve.
The central district, responsible for organizing traditional New Year’s fireworks, has also committed to transitioning to silent displays. This compromise is anticipated to garner widespread support from citizens. Mayor David Procházka has negotiated a similar agreement with the operator of the Christmas markets in the main square of the Republic.
Despite these positive developments in public displays, there remains a concern about individuals purchasing loud fireworks for private use. In response, the city hall is exploring the possibility of introducing regulations, particularly in the city center or natural areas, to address this issue. Legal experts are currently examining the proposed regulations, demonstrating the city’s commitment to a comprehensive approach to animal welfare and noise reduction.
