Prague-shot ‘The Crow’ lands US distribution deal with Lionsgate, expected to release in 2024

The Crow, which film in Prague and elsewhere in the Czech Republic over the summer of 2022, has landed a US distribution deal with Lionsgate Films at the Toronto International Film Festival, Deadline reports. The film is expected to hit cinemas at some point in 2024, with FilmNation already reaching deals on international distribution.

Directed by Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the HuntsmanGhost in the Shell), The Crow stars Bill Skarsgård as Eric Draven, a brutally murdered man who comes back to life as an angel of vengeance. The new film is a reboot of the comic book by James O’Barr that inspired a cult classic 1994 movie, four sequels, and a short-lived TV series.

The Crow also stars British singer FKA twigs (Honey Boy) as Draven’s fiancée Shelly Webster, who is murdered alongside him in the original film, and Danny HustonLaura BirnSami Bouajila, and Jordan Bolger in undisclosed roles.

In addition to being a hit with fans, the 1994 film also achieved infamy as the final film of Brandon Lee, who previously starred as Draven. The son of martial arts star Bruce Lee was tragically killed on set during an accidental shooting.

“We appreciate what the Crow character and original movie mean to legions of fans and believe this new film will offer audiences an authentic and visceral reinterpretation of its emotional power and mythology,” Lionsgate’s Charlotte Koh told Deadline.

“To work with a creative team led by Rupert’s unparalleled visual style and storytelling and with a producing team who have made some of the most popular and impactful films of the last several decades is a true privilege.”

In Prague and surrounding areas of Bohemia, The Crow filmed last year under the working title of Yellow Flower on a modest $50 million budget. It was allocated about 120 million crowns (around $5.2 million) in tax incentives from the Czech Film Fund.

In addition to Barrandov Studios and other areas around Prague, filming locations for The Crow in the Czech Republic included Most, Vrané nad Vltavou, the Břežanské údolí river valley, and Mšecké Žehrovice. Additional filming also took place in Munich in neighboring Germany.

The Crow is produced by Victor Hadida, Molly Hassell, John Jencks, and the late Samuel Hadida and Edward R. Pressman, who produced the earlier film. Zach Baylin (Gran Turismo) and Will Schneider are credited on the film’s screenplay, adapted from O’Barr’s original 1989 comic book.
