Prague’s Heartwarming Tradition: Saint Nicholas, Angel, and Devil Bring Joy and Morality Lessons to Children

In a heartwarming annual tradition on the evening of December 5th, 2023, the enchanting trio of Saint Nicholas, accompanied by his staff, a kind angel, and a somewhat intimidating devil, gathered with small children in Prague. This beloved gathering serves as a whimsical yet significant event aimed at determining the children’s behavior throughout the year, adding a touch of magic and morality to the festive season.

The procession, led by Saint Nicholas, embarked on its journey at Na Františku Hospital, where the trio brought joy to patients, spreading smiles and warmth. Winding through the historic Old Town Square and concluding at the Peace Square, this well-trodden route has become a cherished tradition, drawing substantial interest each year.

While the majority of children welcomed the heavenly trio with delight, a few displayed signs of nervousness, perhaps owing to moments of mischievousness at home. In some instances, parents took advantage of this festive encounter to discreetly communicate with the trio, urging their children to behave better, seamlessly integrating the event into a gentle disciplinary method.

Arriving at the Peace Square, children were encouraged to recite poems, sing songs, or share jokes, fostering delightful interactions with the trio. Shy or unwilling participants were not left out, as every child received a sweet treat as a reward.

A parallel Saint Nicholas group, stationed near the Vinohradský Pavilion, engaged children with various tasks and point-based activities. Upon accumulating a certain number of points, the children approached the group, showcasing their talents and receiving sweet rewards from the benevolent angel.

The diverse group of children, ranging from two to fourteen years old, included not only Czech children but also those from Ukraine. Expressing their joy in multiple languages, including Czech, Ukrainian, and German, the children sang songs to the angel, highlighting the event’s inclusive and festive spirit.

In a delightful conclusion, even those who admitted to a touch of mischievousness were rewarded with chocolate and sweets. This cherished tradition, blending joy and moral lessons, resonates deeply with both locals and the expat community, embodying the spirit of a beautiful Czech custom that transcends cultural boundaries. A young mother from Kyiv, Ukraine, shared her fondness for this heartening tradition, emphasizing its universal appeal and the joy it brings to children and families alike.
