President Petr Pavel Commences Two-Day Visit to Pilsen Region, Spotlight on Strategic Military Base and Brewing Industry

President Petr Pavel initiated a two-day visit to the Pilsen Region on Tuesday, featuring a comprehensive itinerary encompassing a brewery tour, exploration of the Šumava, and engaging discussions with local mayors, citizens, and students. The visit also includes a notable stop at the air rescue service in Líně near Pilsen.

This visit holds particular significance due to the attention drawn to Líně, a location that has become a focal point for both the automotive and military sectors. Volkswagen had initially planned to construct a massive battery factory for electric cars in Líně. However, the Czech Army has expressed intentions to establish a substantial logistics center and a base for domestic and allied troops on the premises, sparking a strategic debate. Chief of the Army of the Czech Republic, Karel Řehka, recently confirmed the army’s interest in retaining control of the site.

President Pavel is set to visit the air rescue service in Líně on Tuesday afternoon, where demonstrations of airborne medics in action and technical interventions of helicopters in challenging terrains are expected. Despite the military’s aspirations for the location, the rescue service is anticipated to remain operational at least until 2028, continuing its vital role in medical transport and serving as a training center for soldiers.

The brewing industry, a significant economic contributor to the Pilsen Region, is also on the agenda. The President’s engagement with citizens and local leaders underscores the diverse aspects of the region’s economy and culture.

Notably, the government’s existing resolution, mandating the construction of a gigafactory in Líně, remains in force despite the military’s interest. The resolution raises questions about the future direction and potential revisions, requiring careful consideration from Prime Minister Fiala’s cabinet. The visit serves as an opportunity for President Pavel to navigate these complex issues and engage with stakeholders across various sectors, contributing to the broader strategic dialogue within the Pilsen Region.
