Rising Concerns as Tens of Thousands of Czech Schoolchildren Regularly Consume Energy Drinks

A concerning trend is emerging in the Czech Republic as a growing number of schoolchildren are found to be excessively consuming energy drinks, raising alarms among researchers and prompting calls for increased regulation from healthcare professionals, psychologists, and educational counselors. A recent study by researchers from Palacký University in Olomouc revealed that approximately 70,000 children are at risk due to regular consumption of these beverages, which can have adverse effects on mental health, physical well-being, and academic performance.

Michal Kalman from the Faculty of Physical Culture at Palacký University expressed the severity of the situation, stating, “We have about 70,000 children who are at risk because they consume energy drinks.” The study found that one in five children aged between 11 and 15 consume these beverages on a weekly basis, and this trend has been on the rise over the years, as indicated by long-term research.

Energy drinks typically contain caffeine and taurine, and their combination with alcohol can pose significant health risks. Shockingly, these drinks are being consumed by students even within school premises. However, schools currently lack the authority to prevent or prohibit the consumption of these drinks brought in by children. Instead, educators are left with the responsibility of explaining the drawbacks to students and encouraging parents to be vigilant.

Researchers in Olomouc discovered that children regularly consuming energy drinks tend to skip breakfast more frequently and are more likely to engage in unhealthy habits such as consuming sweets, sweetened liquids, alcohol, and substances like marijuana or kratom.

A noteworthy finding from the study is the higher prevalence of bullying and cyberbullying among children who regularly consume energy drinks. Clinical psychologist Jan Kulhánek emphasized the role of social networks and the internet, warning against influencers and YouTubers who promote energy drinks and even develop their own brands as part of their merchandise.

Proposals for solutions are expected to be presented by MPs in mid-January, with a working group convened for this purpose. While banning the sale of energy drinks to minors is considered, there is a consensus among experts that public awareness campaigns are also crucial in addressing this growing public health concern.
